CAPTIONING Speech recognition technology for realtime applications is here. AND IT’S EXCELLENT! Speech recognition is being used by court reporters using the voice writing (stenomask) system of court reporting. It cannot be used by reporters using other systems of reporting. Speech recognition is also being used for captioning and related applications. There is - and has been for years - a critical shortage of court reporters and thus a great demand for more and more reporters to enter this field. The shortage and demand for captioners is equally as critical. The same basic skills are required for court reporting and captioning: (1) You must be able to “take dictation” accurately at extremely high speeds. (2) You must have the ability to transcribe ACCURATELY manually, or supervise and oversee the transcription, or - in the case of realtime - you must be able to “on the spot” with no second chance turn out a finished job. With regard to required skill (1), what is meant by “extremely high speeds”? Answer: In excess of 250 wpm (with accuracy) With regard to required skill (2), what is meant by “transcribe accurately”? Answer: Of course, “accurately” is the key word here. A good knowledge of English grammar and punctuation coupled with an excellent vocabulary is required. Homonyms are critical. Homonyms (sometimes called homophones) are words that are pronounced alike but are spelled differently and mean different things. These are words that “spellcheck” will not pick up as being incorrect because “spellcheck” considers both to be correct. The basic skills utilized by voice writers (stenomask reporters) long before computers were invented are STILL ESSENTIAL to utilizing speech recognition technology. Speech recognition technology DOES NOT do the work for you. In fact, it requires more excellence from you. It is simply a vehicle to enable the court reporter/captioner to accomplish realtime. Definition of realtime: The instantaneous translation of the spoken word to text. The voice writing (stenomask) system of taking dictation has no limits when it comes to speed in taking dictation. It takes a lot of work to accomplish your high speed goals, but the rewards are great. We offer the following in this school: *Voice Writing (Stenomask Reporting) (Our course prepares you to take and pass a certification test, either state or national.) *Speech recognition for high speed realtime applications
Options to Ponder Take the court reporting course to build speed and acquire the necessary “written knowledge” material. Then do the “add on” speech recognition course. This would enable you to have two professions: court reporting and captioning. Or If you’re not interested in reporting at all, take only our captioning course. Get your dictation speed up and learn all the “written knowledge” material necessary. The strictly captioning course takes longer than the “add on” speech recognition course, which is available only to students who have completed a complete court reporting course. Our interactive online classes are very effective PLUS offer the convenience of attending live classes from your home computer AND camaraderie and friendly competition with your classmates AND if you have a question, you can ask it right then and there and get an on-the-spot answer from your teacher. Class times fit most work schedules. Our students know the exact cost of their equipment. The cost is not hidden in an overall charge. Thus, no surprises or disappointments.
